All I Know Now // All I Know about All I Know Now by Carrie Hope Fletcher

For anyone who's a little curious, All I Know Now is a self-help book written by Carrie Hope Fletcher, a wonderful singer, actress, youtuber, and overall ray of sunshine.

1. There’s something in it for everyone and their grandmother
I feel like this book would attract absolutely anyone on the planet and beyond, but would do so in a million different ways. There’s something in it for everyone. Some chapter in this gorgeous 322 paged hardback will resonate with SOMEONE in the galaxy. Some chapter with make you go ‘YES OMFG!!’ and confetti will go off in your head and you’ll feel like you found the meaning of life. Because it’s just that kind of book.

2. You learn a little, or a little more.
There’s that one chapter in this book that’ll resonate with anyone, but if the rest of the chapters don’t, you still learn plenty. I’ve never given much thought about bullying, even if it’s a major issue in others' lives, because I’ve been lucky enough in my 10 years of schooling to never experience such a thing. But I learned. I learned how much pain it can cause, and how to deal with the bastard that’s got nothing better to do then to try and ruin your life  pain. Also, consent. I’m a teenager who’s never been in a relationship, and I know how important consent is in a relationship and in sex, but never thought of how it works. You learn guys. This book taught me.

3. Carrie is a fairy in a bright, puffy dress with a basket of wonderful anecdotes.
I almost feel like Carrie wrote the entire book in a puffy brightly coloured fairy dress with a gargantuan basket full of perfect anecdotes that explain every aspect of her book then danced across the pages, showering them over the sentences. Carrie discusses a lot of heavy stuff in this book, and when giving advice tries to find the best words to get her point across. Whenever a point became fuzzy, an anecdote would come along and unfuzz the entire situation. (yes, that’s a word) And they make so. much. sense.

"Judging someone based on one layer is like picking up a book, reading the seventeenth word on page 158 and deciding you don't like it based on that word alone."

4. It makes you turn over multiple leaves
Carrie doesn’t just write for the victims, she writes for the victimisers, especially the ones who aren't aware of it. I FELT THIS WAS UBER IMPORTANT because aren’t all of us a little shitty around the edges? I can’t count the number of times I went: Mm, I’m guilty of that.' Carrie hands you a giant stick and makes you turn over all the grubby leaves and scrub them clean, even the leaves you didn’t know were filthy before. DEEEEEEEP.

5. It makes you wanna yell HELL YEAHHHH! loud enough so the entire world and it's neighbour can hear you.

THIS BOOK IS SO MOTIVATING GUYS. It makes you think hell yeah? Why not? Especially the chapter ‘In it to win it’ when she talks about buying the lottery ticket and taking a chance instead of sitting on your bum all day, scrolling through tumblr and waiting for great things to happen. IT ALL MAKES SO MUCH SENSE on paper and honestly made me reevaluate my entire life a little. Just a little.

6. If 1-5 didn’t impress you wow go away  there’s the stories to think about.
Besides being in complete awe of the entire book, I basically just really want to hang a ‘for sale’ sign in front of my school in my senior year. (yes that was one of the stories, apart from one about being chased by a bear and one with an inflatable penis)
That will be all.
ALSO I’M A SENIOR NEXT YEAR ISN’T THAT CONVENIENT?

Top Ten Tuesday // 7 books I loved to the point of building shrines in their honour and commemorating their days of release with copious amounts of cake and sprinkles.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by the lovely people at The Broke and The Bookish  that simultaneously includes lists and books rolled into one. (it's basically a wonderful creation in itself people, let's be honest) This week's prompt: Top Ten Books I Read in 2015.

Top Seven Best Books I Read in 2015
(in other words.. THE LIST.)

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Um.. duh? I can bravely say with little doubt that Six of Crows is the best book I read this year. There I said it. It's out there. I can't begin to explain how utterly amazing this is. If you've read my posts since my review of Six of Crows you probably have heard this rant already. I'm pretty sure the backstories, characters and The Barrel in this book are the things that did it for me. They were the three things that made me raise my hands in surrender and say: "Yep, you got me." The characters (not just Kaz) are so complex and brilliant you will wonder how a human mind created them. And the backstories, urgh, torment and torture and shattered dreams. URGH. Amazing. I know a lot of people had problems with the dominance of the backstories but I personally loved every bit of them. You're just gonna have to read it for yourself. Come back and weep to be about how Kaz is singularly the best character you've ever read about. Go. I'll be waiting.

   Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Like I said in my previous TTT, Victoria Aveyard was my biggest surprise of the year. Red Queen is terrific and I had few, if any problems with it. I thought I would be reading another typical YA dystopia but what I got instead was Red Queen. ALSO GLASS SWORD IN TWO MONTHS GUYS AHHHH.

    Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Okay. With The Lunar Chronicles, I took the road less traveled. I fell in love with Scarlet (the book, although the character is amazing too) within 5 pages of the story. It remains my favourite book of TLC to this day. I loved the French setting, I loved Wolf, and I loved Scarlet (the character). It helped immensely how most of the story were centered around these 3 things, so I was basically kept blissfully happy throughout the entire read. In fact, I found myself irritably scanning through the parts without these 3 things. Which I'm incredibly guilty about but I mean, come on guys, Scarlet and Wolf are adorable.

    Cinder by Marissa Meyer

I live for beginnings. I don't know about you, but the beginnings of stories have a special place in my bookish heart. Also, world-building. Which usually happens at beginnings. Can we take a good long moment at how unique the world in TLC is, with it's androids and maglevs and cyborgs. (Cinder's technology in itself is fascinating) Also, HOW INCREDIBLE is Marissa Meyer to weave the classic fairytale so seamlessly into her own retelling? Most times, I don't realize the weaving has occured until several chapters later and suddenly I'm like WHOAAAA. WHOAAAAA. Genius I say. Genius.

Saga #3 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples

Out of the 5 volumes of Saga that are currently released, and the 4 that I've read so far, volume 3 is by far the best. One of the best parts about Saga (aside from the INCREDIBLE storyline and GORGEOUS art) is the structure of the pages. Mini cliffhangers are created by having a moment of suspense at the page to the right, so the reader (who probably has bloody fingernails from the constant gnawing) has to flip the page to figure out WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON. Which adds to the torture, but yes, the brilliance of it all. There were several of these page structures throughout volume 3, and while I had a severe heart condition afterwards, it was amazing. Really.

Vampire Rites Trilogy by Darren Shan

If the first bind up of the Darren Shan Saga was amazing, this was even more so. We learn even more about the world of vampires guys HOW CAN YOU REFUSE SUCH A THING. Also, The vamprire trials that Darren had to go through were the result of much gasping and very loud cheering afterwards. Needless to say, people steered clear of me and my shocking tendencies while I read this one.

     Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma

I love books that question my beliefs. That rock my understanding of certain ways and muddle my thoughts on the world. Not many books do. But Forbidden, holy moly, was like a typhoon met a tsunami in my brain and everything was thrown off course if not destroyed for a span of a month. (or several) It's your typical, perfectly normal teenage love story. Except it's not typical. Except it's not normal. Except it's between a brother and a sister. Except it's AMAZING. It's also very, very confusing and by the end of the book the word 'incest' seemed like such a horrible word to describe the wonderful and beautiful relationship between the two characters. I was left wondering, am I okay with this? Is this normal? What does this even mean? URGH MY BRAIN.

SO what about you guys? Which books floated your boat this year? Did you participate in this week's Top Ten Tuesday? Tell me tell me *grins*

Tuesday 8 December 2015

Top Ten Tuesday // Authors I worship as of 2015.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by the lovely people at The Broke and The Bookish  that simultaneously includes lists and books rolled into one. (it's basically a wonderful creation in itself people, let's be honest) This week's prompt: Top Ten New-To-Me Favourite Authors I Read For The First Time in 2015.

Top Ten Seven New-To-Me Favourite Authors I Read For The First Time
in 2015.

(and the books I've read by them)

Marissa Meyer

I mean really, does this even need an explanation? Marissa Meyer is absolutely WONDERFUL at fairytale retellings. The Lunar Chronicles is so unique and so amazing it's almost unbelievable. Like how do people come up with this stuff? ARGH. While I was reading TLC, I would suddenly come across something that seemed vaguely familiar, like when (spoiler alert) Thorne (THAT NAME GUYS DID YOU GET THE RAPUNZEL REFERENCE?) lost his sight (OH MY GOD) when he fell from space (uhhh.. tower?)
DO YOU GET IT? AHHHH THE AMAZINGNESS OF IT ALL.

Plus everything fits and makes perfect sense like a gargantuan jigsaw puzzle where no awkward pieces are left behind.

Leigh Bardugo

Leigh Bardugo is a newfound favourite guys. Life held little meaning before I read Six of Crows. Six of Crows simultaneously broke my heart and filled it with such joy that it nearly exploded from happiness. (either way it didn't give my heart an easy time) She created whom I think is literally my FAVOURITE CHARACTER OF ALL TIME. Kaz. I mean really, anyone who's so completely extraordinary to create such a complex, tormented, EVIL YET WONDERFUL character deserves all the cake in the world (including my share, which is saying something) If you haven't read Six of Crows you need to. You have to. Now.

Victoria Aveyard

I think Victoria Aveyard was my biggest surprise of the year. I picked up Red Queen on a complete whim having absolutely no expectations whatsoever but within 5 minutes of reading it, my friends were already tired of me sputtering nonsense about how PHENOMENAL is was. (that was before I finished the first chapter) After finishing the entire book however, I had no friends left. And my dog went to live with the neighbor for the next week. I'm serious.

Red Queen's world is incredibly unique with amazing characters and a sensible (finally) ending to the romance element. I loved it. And so do you. Even if you haven't read it yet.

Also, can we take a good long moment of respect at how unbelievably young Victoria Aveyard is? People as talented as this make me question my existence.

Brian K. Vaughan

2015 was the year I got into comics. Saga was my first. If you need to know one thing about Saga, here it is: THE HYPE IS REAL. I have never been so utterly consumed by a piece of fiction in my life. Granted the gorgeous, GORGEOUS art by Fiona Staples helped but the story is AMAZING. So. addictive. If you've heard of Saga, and you're kind of skeptical about getting into comics and graphic novels, READ SAGA. Then come back and thank me. You're very welcome.

John Layman

I reviewed Chew in it's entirety as one of my first few posts on this blog. I'm currently on volume 6 of the comic and it just keeps getting better guys. ARGH. My stomach can't take the number of somersaults it goes through in a single sitting of reading this stuff because let's be honest, Chew is not a comic for the faint of heart. But I love it. John Layman is a genius. And Rob Guillory's art is absolutely phenomenal. Enough said.

Carrie Hope Fletcher

Okay so I've been a Hopeful for some time now. I genuinely think Carrie Hope Fletcher is  more of a ray of sunshine than she is a person. Her book, All I Know Now was released this year. Honestly, I've never met anyone who's placed more importance on other people's feelings than Carrie has in 5 pages of the book. It's so sweet and charming and just ahhhh <3
Plus she's writing a fiction book that's being released next year SOMEONE HOLD ME.

Darren Shan
(it seems somewhat preposterous to type Darren Shan's name in a shade of pink but we're gonna go with it because stereotypes are ridiculous)

Darren Shan. What can I say about Darren Shan. THE GUY IS AMAZING AT WORLD-BUILDING. Darren Shan has crafted a world of vampires that's so amazing to read about it's mental. His books are so addictive it's crazy how fast you fly through them. I ignored the entire planet for the 3 hours I was reading these books. Now, Darren Shan (the character) is cool, but Larten Crepsley *deep breaths* is something else entirely. (if you've read this series, please tell me I'm not alone on the Crepsley boat) Sadly I've only read the first 2 bind ups of this series. BUT I WILL CONTINUE FRIENDS!

SO which authors surprised you this year? Did you participate in this week's Top Ten Tuesday? Let me know!

Story Mash-Up // Where I'm very excited

Image taken from Freepik

The wizarding world has been quiet since the day Harry Potter defeated the evil wizard named Voldemort. For seventeen years, the magical community continues to live in harmony and secrecy among the Muggles. The students, fresh from their summer vacations, are returning to school with nothing but excitement for the coming year in their minds. Truly, nothing could shake this era of peace ever again...or so they believe.

I am trying my level best not to hyperventilate.
GUYS! This is so exciting.
The lovely Joan @Fiddler Blue with the help of Trisha @Bookgasm and Michelle @The Writing Hufflepuff came up with amazing idea of writing a collaborative story with several bloggers. In this case, a story set 17 years after The Battle of Hogwarts, at the start of the new school year.
AHHHHHHHH.

Six bloggers, including myself signed up for this adventure. Each blogger has been assigned to write 500 words of the story per week, and an epilogue at the end of the entire story. So, six bloggers, six weeks. Plus an epilogue each. We all created our characters and will write from the POV of that specific character. Needless to say, I was ridiculously excited to read about everyone's characters (who are all so diverse with SUCH UNIQUE PERSONALITIES GAH) and create my own which was heaps of fun. I believe my entire household needs a break from my constant yammering about this project.

So guys... let me introduce you to Persephone Rae Lestrange, or Percy for short.

Credits to the lovely Joan for creating this ID for me! *hugs you*

Basic Info

Name: Persephone Rae Lestrange (Percy Rae)
Age: 13
Blood status: Half-blood
Occupation: Student
Hogwarts House: Ravenclaw
Year level: 3rd year

Extra classes: Care of Magical Creatures, Divination and Muggle Studies
Wand: Walnut, 10 1/2 inches, dragon heartstring
Pets: A barn owl with a white face and light brown feathers named Ophelia

Appearance: (Refer to ID)
Persephone takes after her mother’s appearance with fair skin, black wavy waist length hair, and light brown eyes. She’s not very tall, about 5’2 and is slim. She wears her hair down most of the time. She is constantly wearing a silver ring that looks like entwined branches on the second finger of her right hand which belonged to her mother. Persephone has a habit of twirling the ring around her finger particularly when she is nervous or thinking.

History

Persephone’s mother was a beautiful muggle named Raela Warren who’s a distant relative of Moaning Myrtle’s. Her father Gabriel Lestrange, is a horrible person who descended from the Lestrange family. He was drawn in by Raela’s astounding beauty and intelligence and eventually married her. She was fascinated with the world of witchcraft and wizardry so Lestrange thought her everything he knew about his world. For a while, the two were happily in love. But, Gabriel was disowned by his family only a year after marrying Raela, a ‘mudblood’ in their eyes. As the years went by, Gabriel got more and more bitter as he couldn’t accept his family’s abandonment. He begged and pleaded and even offered to end the marriage but the Lestranges refused to accept him. He blamed Raela for it and took his rage out on her, frequently abusing her behind closed doors. Persephone learned the hard way not to save her mother during these nights, as her first and final attempt at it led to her father breaking both her wrists. So she stopped, spending these nights curled up under her bed with the pillow over her head to drown out her mother’s screams. Finally one night, Raela turned mad from grief and abuse.  Raela Warren has been in a mental institute ever since. The beautiful woman was reduced to a hunched, muttering patient with wide, deranged eyes and an irrational fear for daylight. When talking about his insane wife to friends, Gabriel treats it like a joke and often says that ‘She was crazy to begin with anyway.’ Persephone hates her father because of this, but is forced to live under his roof. She visited her mother on the rare occasions that her father allowed it, but her hope that her mother would get better someday eventually dimmed into nothingness. On her eleventh birthday, she received a letter of acceptance from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Her father hoped for her to get into Slytherin, like so many Lestranges before her. But Persephone was overjoyed when she was sorted into Ravenclaw.
The past two years at Hogwarts have been blissfully pleasant. Persephone excelled at her classes, made friends, and avoided home as much as she could. Her friends have yet to know the real story behind her hatred for her father, and remain in the dark about her mother’s insanity.

Interests

Hobbies:
Reading, talking to Ophelia, chatting with her friends, and eating cake (obviously)

Likes:
1. Dark nursery rhymes (her favourite by far is Oranges and Lemons, particularly the last line that goes: 'Here comes a candle to light you to bed, and here comes a chopper to chop of your head.')
2. Tea (which she drinks copious amounts of whenever possible)
3. Cake (she is very keen on cake and often sneaks large amounts of it from mealtimes at The Grand Hall to the common room.)

Dislikes:
1.    The Dark (since her mother lost her sanity, her room in the mental institute is constantly pitch dark. Any form of brightness drives her mother into a frenzy and so absolutely no light is let into the room. Persephone is terrified of the dark as it’s a cold reminder of asylums and her mother’s insanity)
2.    Main courses at mealtimes (she prefers to skip straight to dessert)
3.    Her last name, Lestrange, which is a bitter reminder of her father.

Strengths:
Persephone is extremely intelligent, but shy about her vast knowledge. She’s kind-hearted and sweet, like her mother used to be. Although she’s quite shy when meeting new people, she warms up quickly and is a great and loyal friend to all that call her so. She’s witty and hilarious, but only among her friends at Hogwarts. Her talents include eating lots of cake, reading (yes that’s a talent shhhh) and excelling particularly at potions and transfiguration.

Weaknesses:
Persephone is deathly afraid of the dark. She’s a guarded person, particularly on information about her parents and family. She closes in on herself when around her parents, and becomes a quiet girl with a fair few words to share. There are not too many things Persephone is not good at, but Herbology seems to have an acute dislike for her. She has killed and severely maimed almost all the magical plants she has practiced on. I guess you could say she kind of sucks at it. Also, she’s awful (almost laughably so) at Wizard’s Chess.

Favourite subjects: Potions and Transfiguration
Least favourite subjects: Divination and Herbology

Quiddich player?: No

The Little Things (extra information)

Persephone has two very different personalities, one for her parents and one for Hogwarts. Needless to say, in front of her parents, Persephone is closed, scared, quiet, and constantly seething. She says next to nothing especially to her father and hardly cracks a smile. At Hogwarts however, she is completely herself, showing all the wonderful traits you read up there.
Although guarded and secretive about her parents, Persephone is not a recluse.

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT! *GRINS*

Top Ten Tuesday // 6 Novels in 2016 I obsessively count down for

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by the lovely people at The Broke and The Bookish  that simultaneously includes lists and books rolled into one. (it's basically a wonderful creation in itself people, let's be honest) This week's prompt: Top Ten 2016 Debuts Novels We Are Looking Forward To. (I'm breaking the rules a little on this one guys. )

Top Ten 2016 Debut Novels We Are Looking Forward To

  • On the Other Side - Carrie Fletcher
Release date: 14th July 2016

Evie Snow is eighty-two when she quietly passes away in her sleep, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. It's the way most people wish to leave the world but when Evie reaches the door of her own private heaven, she finds that she's become her twenty-seven-year-old self and the door won't open.

Evie's soul must be light enough to pass through so she needs to get rid of whatever is making her soul heavy. For Evie, this means unburdening herself of the three secrets that have weighed her down for over fifty years, so she must find a way to reveal them before it's too late. As Evie begins the journey of a lifetime, she learns more about life and love than she ever thought possible, and somehow , some way, she may also find her way back to her long lost love . .

AHH CARRIE'S WRITING A FICTION BOOK! It sounds very chick-lit, and to be very honest, it's not a genre I'm familiar with. I'm hopeful (hah see what I did there)  that I'm pleasantly surprised by this one.

  • Heartless - Marissa Meyer
Release date: 8th November 2016

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland — the infamous Queen of Hearts — she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the yet-unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend and supply the Kingdom of Hearts with delectable pastries and confections. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next Queen.

At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the king's marriage proposal, she meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship.

Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

The story about how The Queen of Hearts became The Queen of Hearts. Excuse me for a moment while I fangirl over how ingenious this idea is oh my god! But, I admit I'm a little iffy on the secret courtship- parents not approving- love triangle idea. I'm all for a tragic love story, but love triangles are always a little unsettling. Marissa Meyer rocks though guys, so lets trust her on this one.

  • Glass Sword (Red Queen #2) - Victoria Aveyard
Release date: 9th February 2016

I can't post the synopsis for this one because it contains some major spoilers. But really, if you haven't read Red Queen we can't be friends. Red Queen is honestly one of the best reading surprises I had this year, and the release date for Glass Sword IS SO CLOSE GUYS LOOK FEBRUARY AHHHHH. <3 <3

  • The Hammer of Thor (Magnus Chase and The Gods of Asgard #2) - Rick Riordan
Release date: 4th October 2016

I have a confession to make... I haven't read The Sword of Summer. I KNOW I KNOW. I like to think of Rick Riordan's books as my entire childhood, even if I first picked up The Lightning Thief when I was 11. I loved the Percy Jackson series so much, and I've heard that the narration style in Magnus Chase is quite similar so I'm just waiting to dissolve in a puddle of feels once I get my hands on this book.

  • The Hidden Oracle (The Trials of Apollo #1) - Rick Riordan
Release date: 3rd May 2016

How do you punish an immortal?

By making him human.

After angering his father Zeus, the god Apollo is cast down from Olympus. Weak and disorientated, he lands in New York City as a regular teenage boy. Now, without his godly powers, the four-thousand-year-old deity must learn to survive in the modern world until he can somehow find a way to regain Zeus's favour.

But Apollo has many enemies - gods, monsters and mortals who would love to see the former Olympian permanently destroyed. Apollo needs help, and he can think of only one place to go . . . an enclave of modern demigods known as Camp Half-Blood.

How do you punish a fangirl?
By writing a book about Apollo turning into a teenager, falling from the heavens, joining Camp Half-Blood and spending the rest of his days with Perceus Jackson.
Then only release that book six months from now.

*FLIPS TABLE*

I don't know about you, but the God I fangirled over the most in Percy Jackson was Apollo. When I heard about this book I guility thought: This sounds like fanfiction?? But let's be honest, I'm not complaining.

“Wow," Thalia muttered. "Apollo is hot."
"He's the sun god," I said.
"That's not what I meant.”

  • The Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows #2) - Leigh Bardugo
Release date: 22nd September 2016

GIVE ME MORE KAZ.. NOW. I want more of everything in the first book, backstories, wit, schemes, the Barrel.. Kaz. (pile them on me, pile them on me) I can't wait for this guys. I NEED MORE KAZ. Do you feel me?

______________________________________________________________________________

SO GUYS are you excited for more Kaz  any book releases in 2016? Did you participate in this week's Top Ten Tuesday? Let me know in the comments so I can go read your posts as well! :D
